Our Approach

We don’t ask what a village lacks. We ask who and what it already has.

ASAP works in the rural ‘last-mile’ villages of the Eastern Cape, which are isolated and under-resourced, and rarely reached by mainstream development. Our purpose is to alleviate poverty through community-driven initiatives that build safe, resilient villages capable of caring well for their children.

We have grown from four communities in 2022 to eleven in 2026, and from a child-welfare focus to a model that addresses food security, gender-based violence and early childhood development together.

Our approach: Asset-Based Community Development

Most development starts by mapping problems. ABCD starts by mapping assets: the will, skills and knowledge of a village’s women, the land, the respect held by traditional leaders, the relationships between neighbours who already look out for one another. We work to connect these existing assets to each other, and to new skills and opportunities, so that solutions belong to the community rather than to us.

Our approach has evolved to respond to what lasts: communities that lead their own recovery and development keep leading it long after a funder’s cycle ends.

Our three pillars

Drawing on evidence from over 90,000 Poverty Stoplight surveys across South Africa, we’ve learned that three things allow people to move themselves out of poverty for good:

• Healing: chronic poverty and trauma keep people in survival mode, and until that is addressed, skills and opportunity alone don’t stick.
• Access to Skills: practical, often accredited training that turns existing knowledge and effort into a professional capability, whether as an ECD practitioner, a community care worker, a farmer, a paralegal or a first responder to GBV, paired with financial literacy, coaching and mentorship.
• Access to Opportunity: government funding, market access and formal registration as a CBO, so that skills turn into a livelihood rather than a certificate.

Why holistic

A hungry child, a traumatised mother, unsafe schools and village spaces, and a household with no birth certificates compound one another. So our four programme areas run inside the same villages, around the same families, at the same time, and are built to reinforce each other. We call this a village ecosystem: interconnected enough that progress in one part of a child’s life supports progress in every other part.

The child at the centre

Every programme and partnership ASAP builds serves one outcome: a child growing up in a village strong enough and safe enough to give them a fair start in life. That is our constitutional purpose, and the measure we hold ourselves to.
